Thanks to classified staff for making the Education Fair possible

January 30, 2010

The Salem-Keizer Educator Fair has been put to bed for another year. Well, almost. Many of us have a load of materials to unpack and put away. The event was held at the Salem Conference Center on Saturday, January 30. Event Coordinator Susana Ghio estimates that there were over 500 teacher candidates in attendance. Principals and assistant principals from every school, as well as administrators, including superintendent, Sandy Husk, were on hand to greet and interview prospective teachers.

Education Support Professional Day

Happy ESP Day, today November 18th, 2009! SKACE has over 2,000 active members, and there are over 2,400 classified employees in the Salem Keizer School District, and each and every one makes a difference in the lives and education of the students. Today you should be receiving a certificate thanking you for your service as well as a small gift from SKACE. The Superintendent sent each ESP a letter thanking all of us for our contributions. The Statesman Journal did a great article on several of our members, describing their jobs and what important work they do on a daily basis.

Attention NEA ESP Members:

SKACE Coat Drive

The Coat Drive is exciting this year! A.C.Gilbert/The Discovery Village has offered to partner with us on Saturday, November 21st from 5:30 -7:00 p.m. Any child who is accompanied by an adult, and receives a coat, also gets free admission to the facilities. This is such a great opportunity for our community, and we are hoping to have lots of our members get involved with sorting and organizing the coats. Sorting will take place on Friday the 20th from 5:30 till we're done, and pizza/soda will be provided. Please let us know if you'll be able to volunteer on either evening.

Changes to the SKACE Website

We have been working steadily along to build our new website. This week's changes include: pictures and email addresses on the Executive Board page; names of Association Reps; and, thanks to a great suggestion, the Shared Vacation Donation forms have been posted on the More Info page, and the most recent newsletter is posted.

**Regarding the Association Rep page, please review your school's reps, and if a change needs to be made, let us know. Not all of the department Association Reps are listed yet; still working on those.

SKACE Representative Assembly Has Heart

Representatives from across our Association met on Monday, September 21, 2009, at the Support Services Center in the first Assembly for this school year. Discussions ranged from computer use to committees, and then a suggestion was made to assist our fellow members by bringing a can of food to each SKACE sponsored meeting. The Transportation Department has started a Helping Hands Committee who is finding creative ways to help out those who are having a hard time making ends meet, so SKACE Reps will be able to boost the Helping Hands' efforts.
